It lulls you into a false sense of security with plentiful guns and ammo before marooning you on another island full of the infected and freakish mutations. The follow up does what you’d expect in building on the mechanisms and mechanics of the first, adding some new features and also throwing you straight into the action in the first few minutes. After your escape from Banoi, you’re rescued by a cargo ship that ends up with infected on board and your skills are needed again. It’s frantic and a total change to what you’re used to after Dead Island’s main campaign.Ĭoming on the heels of the first game, Dead Island: Riptide literally starts where the first game stops – not that you’re left on a cliffhanger, so there’s no real spoilers. Conversely, if you play the Ryder White DLC you’ll start in that town and have to deal with an all action fight from beginning to end. Story-wise your motivation is simply to escape the chaos, you really need no other when the zombie apocalypse hits, and the pacing of events is balanced nicely even if there’s a little dragging through the second act set in the town of Moresby. One of the things I’d forgotten was just how many survivors are around, hiding in holiday bungalows waiting for someone to find their missing teddy bear, or needing to trade diamonds for champagne. There’s a serious amount of time to be spent in game not just on the story, but also with the quantity of fetch quests setup by the ancillary characters you meet. Picking Logan as a character from the four available – a down and out American football player who specialises in blunt weapons and a knife throwing special skill the fight for survival begins in the hotel with immunity to the virus and a massive hangover before moving through the impressive resort, onto a local town, through a jungle and finally to a prison and secret lab on another island (of course!). It’s also still as good fun as it ever was. In this version the open world hasn’t changed, the areas take a while to traverse on foot but you still have to load between sections, the missions are still the same, and the enemies are are as deceptively tough as ever. Returning to Banoi and experiencing the zombie outbreak like this really does show what the studio had intended with the initial release, and where a large chunk of inspiration for Dying Light came from.

Dead Island Definitive Edition does what it says in the title – gives us the definitive version of the game which means a stable framerate, less buggy AI, tweaked visuals, and all the DLC that was released… including a popular mod that appeared on the PC version. Techland worked hard to fix issues with the original release, and to provide DLC that expanded nicely on the campaign, and in the end gave us a respectable game.
It also shoved aside the genre staple of firearms whilst simultaneously pulling in some of the crazy crafting of Dead Rising, giving a reason for scavenging for anything that would add some more heft to a hammer, or menace to a machete. A clever use of the analogue sticks to manually control your slicing and pummelling motions meant that dismemberment become a skill rather than just a button push, and a full drop in/drop out co-op for up to four players ensured that you didn’t have to brave the hordes alone if you weren’t particularly co-ordinated. It’s fair to say it had a few issues, but that didn’t stop it from being a lot of fun. When it finally burst through the letterbox we were treated to a fully first person hack and slash zombie adventure with some great ideas, nice mechanics, and a lot of bugs. Originally releasing in 2011, Dead Island wowed us with its infamous CGI trailer-in-reverse, building intrigue and excitement before it finally made it’s way into our living rooms. On top of that they’ve found time to develop a side scrolling action game in Dead Island: Retro Revenge. In the down time since Dying Light, or maybe even in their lunch breaks, the team have ported Dead Island and Dead Island: Riptide into the latest version of their proprietary Chrome engine so that we’re presented with the last gen games in current gen visuals. Of all the games we’d want to be remastered, there’s probably very few of us that would have Dead Island at the top of the list, but Techland have decided to do just that.
